The next time Spencer decided to poke fun at me for living a boring life because I wasn’t great with change or surprises, I’d point to the last twenty-four hours as proof of the exact opposite.

In that time, I’d jerked off to him, stumbled upon two guys having sex while hiking, and stripped down naked by the pool in front of a resort full of strangers. So, when approached by our two newest friends (making new friends—another recent accomplishment, yay!) and asked if we wanted to join them at a beachside bonfire, I decided to ride the I’m outta my comfort zone train for one more stop and agree to it.

Okay, so a couple of those points weren’t my finest moments—and definitely not things I would ever share with Spencer for fear of freaking him out completely—but at least they proved I was willing to take chances.

Which meant that now that I’d had my fill of out-there adventures, I was very much looking forward to waving goodbye to the craziness of the last day and a half and saying a warm hello to the rest of our getaway. Which I was hoping would be the relaxing, rejuvenating trip I was sure Spencer had planned to the very last detail in his spreadsheet.

All I wanted was one simple thing: no more fucking surprises.

So this was how the rest of the night would play out. We’d go and check out this bonfire. I’d start yawning within ten minutes. Spencer would notice and suggest we leave. We’d make a gracious exit, and my head would be on my pillow before midnight. Just like a gay, twenty-first century Cinderella... With better dance moves.

Yes. Crazy Town was growing smaller in the rear view mirror.

Next stop was Normalville.

We reached the fire. Small groups of people were huddled around it sitting on blankets. Some were drinking out of red plastic cups, and others were laughing, while a few simply enjoyed the flickering flames in silence. I smiled, liking the laid-back vibe.

“Hey, I think we see someone we know.” Emry tapped me on the arm. “We might go say hello. Are you guys okay by yourselves?”

“Of course. Go. Have fun,” I responded.

I watched Hawk and Emry walking over to a guy and—hello—I certainly hoped they knew him because all of their tongues just got very intimately acquainted. First Emry, and then Hawk, gave the guy the kind of kiss you’d see in movies. Deep. Passionate. And very tongue-y.

Spencer saw the whole thing, turned to me, and smiled. “After what we saw this morning, that seems kinda mild, don’t ya think?”

I grinned. “Yeah, I guess it does.”

Spencer pointed to a clearing a little bit away from the fire. “Wanna go sit up over there?”

I gave a nod and followed him up the slight embankment. When we reached the spot, he tugged at my arm. “I didn’t bring a blanket.”

The panic in his voice made it sound like he had just remembered he had left the oven on back home. But knowing Spencer like I did, I knew it mattered to him.
